LeBrun missed opportunity to promote wind park

In his Aug. 18 column, Fred LeBrun missed an opportunity to advance the public discussion about energy and the environment, and to provide some independent insight.

Instead of applauding the Adirondack Park Agency for its unanimous decision to allow preliminary field survey work for a green energy project, he unfortunately chose to comment from a narrow and parochial perspective.

LeBrun would like people to believe that the concept for Adirondack Wind Energy Park is controversial. In fact, it is supported by more than 20 regional town and county governments, state and federal elected leaders, environmental groups (including Greenpeace USA), respected environmentalists and area newspapers (including the Times Union).

LeBrun right about bad effects of wind project

Fred LeBrun was right on the mark in his Aug. 18 column, "This wind blows ill for wilderness." Four-hundred-foot wind turbines do not belong in the Adirondack Park.

The small amount of energy to be gained from 10 windmills is not worth the price of destroying the views from Gore Mountain and the Siamese Pond Wilderness, and setting such a dangerous precedent for the park.

Big business wind developers and wind turbine manufacturers are licking their lips just waiting for an opening in the Adirondacks, where there are literally hundreds of mountain tops and other sites that may be suitable for wind turbines.

Panel shoots the breeze about wind power

David Gibson, executive director of The Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, agreed that the ecological treasures New York could lose in the wake of wind farm construction and operation are too great to risk just for the generation of green power.

"We all, everyone in this room probably, are committed to moving us toward a more sustainable path," Gibson said. "We all want clean, green, much more friendly habits, but we don't think tall industrial structures on ridge lines anywhere is good public policy."
